Artists' books: Books as art

(Megan Daley)

Purpose

Students will investigate the dual purpose of books - books as a form of art and books as a container or vessel of information.

Description

This unit of 10 weeks will be undertaken by a Year 4 extension group of approximately 24 students. After brainstorming current knowledge of books, students will research the history of books around the world, and think about types of books they are familiar with. Artists' books will be introduced as a type of book which students are not as familiar with. Students will research artists' books in depth and explore creative ways to produce both individual and collaborative artists' books, which will be based on memories.

Procedure

Before beginning this unit, teachers should read the Artists' books sourcebook module (Queensland Studies Authority) to gain a thorough understanding of the topic. Teachers should either visit or view online the collection of artists' books at the State Library of Queensland. When examining this collection, teachers should make notes about techniques which have been employed by artists, and which of these techniques could be adapted to the school setting.

Assessment

Students will be given a document wallet at the beginning of this unit with their name and the title of the unit. This document wallet will become their portfolio of work, one of the tools on which levels of student performance will be based. The document wallet will also have a notebook for students to write notes. This is an extension group, where students are not formally assessed, however, students are aware from the beginning that self-assessment will be undertaken and a portfolio of work will be produced, and that the teacher will be evaluating their overall performance.

Evaluation

At the time of writing, this unit had only just begun but students seem enthusiastic about their studies and once the teacher materials are prepared and organised, the unit should flow smoothly.
