Identity: "Looking In & Out of Ourselves" … An Artist Book Presentation
(Joanna Faber)
Purpose
To combine ideas from the Queensland Study Authority Visual Arts Sourcebook Modules: Artists' Books and Looking In and Looking Out with the resource of the State Library of Queensland prospective Online Artists' Book Collection to achieve Level 5 and 6 Visual Arts outcomes. The theme is based on Identity and the work is presented as an Artist Book.
Description
This four to six week unit attempts to use our school's integration of computers in art with the use of Photoshop Essentials software into a greater coherent whole and extend the students' self concept and awareness of social & cultural issues. By referring to the State Library of Queensland Artists' Books Collection, they are also exploring a variation on public art in their own community then extending this format to global collections.

Procedure
Teachers would need to become familiar with various styles of book making/binding and/or utilise a guest presenter such as a book artist. The following activities could then be undertaken:
- Take students through simple book forms allowing them to extend their own researches to make informed choices.
- Supply a variety of media to develop image making as well as book forming to allow a breadth of experiences.
- Starting with photographic imagery from school cameras (students would need familiarity with these) or their own photos (scanned or photocopied), students make it their own personal property and responsibility. (Students construct & communicate personal meanings that show processes and products.)
- Take students through directed activities to explore the Concept of 'Self' as Identity e.g. drawn self portrait within family… or computer manipulation of photo of friends… or list an open ended set of possibilities to work through… e.g. a monoprint… a montage of magazine favourites…etc.
- Students develop imagery to meet criteria on how they wish to present their identity in the Artists' Book format taking consideration of binding restrictions, quality of card/paper (fold-ability?), size etc.
- Students' final presentation should also reflect the importance of Cover or Container.
- Students are asked to create their own artist statement in reference to the original source of inspiration from State Library of Queensland collection.
A Student Assessment Task Sheet and a PowerPoint presentation will be available for use with this unit.
